Beer is the English national drink. It goes back a lot further than tea of even coffee. There was a time when everybody drank beer all day. Simply because it was much safer than the water (because it had been boiled).
But then it had very little similarity to what you can get now. The art of balancing malt and hops was yet to come about. What our ancestors had was not much more than a sweet alcoholic liquid. Then in the 16th century the Dutch brought us hops and the perfect combination was brought together. However old habits die hard and most beer for the next few centuries was more malty than hoppy.
Now we have many possible types of beer from many different breweries. Light hoppy ones to dark and balanced ones.
BUT. Unless we support these now they will not be here for our children.
